When we ran a deal for Kiteboarding back in June, I snatched up one of these right away. My lady friend Jamie and good buddy Manny also decided to get in on the fun as well and we finally made our way to Assateague this past weekend.
We actually drove down from NYC and partook in a good old fashioned road trip (complete with a Cracker Barrel dinner on Friday night). By the time we finally got to Assateague (after a few wrong turns and a pleasant but completely unnecessary stop in Chincoteague), it was go time.
We met Camille Spencer from YK Kiteboarding and she introduced us to Matt from YK as well. Unfortunately, there wasn’t a ton of wind (which is integral for kiteboarding) but we learned how to put a kite together and some of the basics of the sport. It’s actually incredible how far its come given that the sport itself has only been around for 10 years.
After our education session, Matt and Camille let us run wild on the stand up paddle boards (see pics below). This provided several memorable falls and reminded me, yet again, that I do much better work indoors behind a computer and away from the sun and any form of athletic activity.
We ended the day being taught how to properly fly a trainer kite and do some fun tricks.
Even though we didn’t get out on water to do some real kiteboarding, it was a great time in the sun and we got a chance to learn about the new fun sport. Camille and Matt were great and I’m glad we had a chance to work with them. YK Kiteboarding gives lessons on kiteboarding and stand up paddleboarding well into October, so if you’re looking for a fun and different activity, definitely give them a shout.
